If you want to just try it out, get VMWare Workstation and run the linux distro as a simulation in the VMware environment, so if you don't like it or encounter problems you won't have to go through the hassle of reinstalling Windows again.

A trial version of Workstation is available at www.vmware.com

You can use the Live CD which Ubuntu gives you.. It boots from teh CD to give you agood preview of the OS.//

Another famous Live On CD distro is Knoppix!
http://www.knoppix.org/

This is one of the best live on boot Linux distribution!

Regarding the stability of Linux, one thing is for sure.... you must know various commands to handle it.. Cos, its GUI is very heavy! Needs atleast 256MB of RAM if you are installating any latest distro!

And when Linux hangs... which is very rare... you are fixed!
So you need to do lots of ups and down to get it back n up!

I would post a detailed tutorial regarding it!

Rest, LINUX rocks... My only hindrance for not using it is the problem of Internet Connection! My broadband provider doesnt give me a Linux Login Client!
So have to get stucked with Windows...

Linux sure rocks as jayanth and virux says. ... i use Suse 9.1 and Redhat . .. both of them rock. .. linux sure is more stable than any other OS that u might use. .. but as virus said u need to know many shell commands like those in DOS . .. but its fun if u know them . .. not knowing them does'nt mean that u can't use linux . .only thing it might take time for u to learn how to do things in linux that u generally do on the other OS u use .. but be assured that what u can do on ur present OS that can also be done on linux . .anything at all ...

@ abhay :- Very much true.. Terminal commands are great to know.. And even if you dont know, the man will help you..

@ Virus :- As you said when Linux Hangs........ Its Rare.. Its only hardware problems which cause Linux to Hang as per the research by RH... It can hang because of User Mistakes also.. Unlike other OS it doesnt Hang by itself..

yeah as far as ive been using linux it was only once that linux hung and that too cuz i did a stupid error something with the cdrom .. .
@jayanth : yeah shell commands are cool to know. .. its fun and faster to do jobs through the shell .. . but yeah mans do help out. . but i find them a little too confusing. . . the web helps a lot for shell commands . ..

mani_rawalpindi

maybe Jayanth could post complete commands with some details based on his own experience

jayanth

There are far too many commands in Linux to remember and post the Syntax.. So its better to use man.. Else you post a query i will answer..

Also @ Abhay :- Linux does hang.. I've had no expericence with those but they do hang when the processor gets heated right up to the core.. Also when there are too many scratches on the cd.. When you try to access stuff from windows which have bad sectors and are badly fragmented..

As we can see all these are ONLY hardware problems.. I dont remmeber getting Kernal problems at all.. No problem with the OS as well..
